Sowing Seeds
Indoor Sowing
A Read-Along Activity
The teddy bears have been having a lot of fun today. They had bought some vegetable seeds that they were going to grow in their greenhouse, but they decided they would also try to grow some of them indoors first, and plant them outside later.
All they needed was a glass jam jar, some kitchen towels, and some seeds.
So they set about sowing their seeds. First of all, they folded some kitchen towels long enough to fit their jam jar, and lined the inside of the jar with them, pushing the kitchen towel right up to the glass.
Then they pushed their pea and broad bean seeds down between the kitchen towel and the glass of the jam jar, about half way down.
They also folded some kitchen towel and placed it on a saucer, and then wet it with water - again, not too much so that it was flooded, just enough to make it really damp. Then Boo shook out some of the curly cress seeds onto the wet kitchen towel.
When they had finished sowing, they watched and watched to see if the seeds would start to grow. Apparently, they don't grow quite that fast though, and after the bears had watched them for a while with nothing happening, the jars and saucers were left on the kitchen windowsill in the light.
The bears' only job now is to make sure that the kitchen towel doesn't dry out, so they will have to check it every day, especially if it has been sunny. Then they will just wet the kitchen towel again, and wait to see what happens! Of course, they will let you know how they get on.
You could try sowing all sorts of seeds in this way too, and have fun eating the results!! The bears know that they will! Yum! Yum! Egg and curly cress sandwiches will be on the menu soon!!
