Sailing Boats
Sailing At The Beach
A Read-Along Activity
Remember last time when the teddy bears made sailing boats to take on holiday? (You can read all about that here).
Well, the bears have loved playing with their boats whilst they've been away. They visited the beach several times and took their sailing boats with them every time.
When they arrived at the beach the first time, they couldn't wait to try out their boats and they all rushed towards the sea with the boats clutched in their paws.
"Hold on!" shouted Scary. "We can't sail our boats in the sea," he said. "For one thing, they are only little and a big wave could knock them over, or take them way, way out to sea and we'll never see them again!"
The teddy bears didn't like the sound of that! "Where can we sail them then?" asked Henry sadly, looking at the miles of sand around them. He knew they couldn't sail boats on sand!
"Let's go over here, by these big rocks," Scary suggested. They all trooped dejectedly over to the rocks, feeling very disappointed. They couldn't sail boats on rocks either!
But as they got closer to the rocks, they noticed that amongst them there were several pools of water, left behind by the tide going out. There were small pools, and bigger pools - plenty of space to sail their boats!
Scary explained that they still had to be careful so that they didn't slip on the wet rocks and hurt themselves, or get thoroughly soaked by falling in! The water was a bit cold so none of them fancied getting too wet.
"We can sail our boats safely here," said Scary. "Plus, we'll be able to easily retrieve them so that we can take them home and use them again on our next holidays."
The teddy bears loved the idea of sailing their boats in the little pools. Teddy made sure that little Custard didn't fall in as he launched his boat, and Scary looked after Tommy.
They spent all day sailing their boats, with just a brief stop for a picnic lunch. The wind blew their boats over the water and the boats sailed really well. The teddy bears set up races to see who had the fastest boat. Some children on their own holidays came over to watch and the teddy bears offered them a go at launching a boat and joining in the races as well.
Too soon it was time to leave the beach and go back to their holiday cottage for tea. But the bears will definitely be visiting again before they go home, and will keep the boats safely in a big biscuit tin, ready for their next holiday!
