It's been too cold and wet to do any gardening outside recently - despite Summer only just ending!! - so the teddy bears decided to try their paws at growing something indoors.

They found the tops off some carrots (which were left over when the carrots themselves had been peeled and chopped for eating - Yum! Yum!)

The bears put a small amount of water in a saucer and then put the tops, cut side down, in the water. They placed the saucer in the kitchen windowsill and settled down to watch. Nothing happened for an hour. In fact, nothing seemed to happen all day.

Little bears are not really known for their infinite patience so after the first hour, when they thought they had been very patient, they went off to do other stuff.

But Tommy decided he wanted to keep an eye on the carrots to make sure that they didn't dry out. So he regularly visited them and gave them some more water when they needed it.

After three days of constant checking and watering, when he next examined them, tiny green shoots had started to grow out of the tops of the carrots. He was very excited!

Tommy continued to inspect them and water them when necessary, and he was eventually rewarded with tall feathery fronds growing up to be taller than him!

That's not very tall anyway, but to Tommy they had turned into giant trees!!!

He called the other bears to come and look at them. The bears were all very proud that Tommy had managed to grow such lovely plants.

They'll never grow into new carrots, but the soft, fluffy plants are very pretty to look at, and Tommy had a great sense of achievement to have grown them so well.

Look at the photos to show you how nicely they grew.

You could try to grow carrot 'trees' as well - they will need to be looked after - but see if yours will grow taller than you too!
